It’s hard to believe that 11 years ago we bought The Cloran Mansion.
If I had to describe our first month it would be very simple, Scared, Broke, Amazed and today I would just say Still Amazed and absolutely no regrets.
It’s been an incredible 11 years. We were married only 2 weeks before we opened, moved from a major city to a minor city and into a business that I knew absolutely nothing about. To this day I have never spent the night at any other Bed and Breakfast, but I didn’t need to, my guests have taught me everything.
So many guests have touched our lives and I hope that we have touched theirs as well. So many people have arrived here as guests and left as friends, many are almost like family.
We have had thousands of guests in our 11 years and although I cannot remember all of them, many of them will always be in our hearts.
We have had all kinds of people here from school bus drivers, teachers, technical people, factory workers, politicians, producers, and Secret Service, but they have all had one common element, a mini break. They are all just normal people looking for a small break from everyday.
We have had 97 weddings to date, 66 engagements on the property and 5 renewal of vows and a commitment ceremony. Each one has brought us wonderful memories.
We have had guests who arrived while dating, returned as an engaged couple, returned again as a married couple and returned again to show us their new baby. We love the Christmas cards and baby picture that we receive each year.
We have made some incredible friends here, lifelong friends. You cannot put a price on that.
We have had the opportunity in the past 11 years to become part of the community. Cheryl has been the President of the Chamber of Commerce, Vice President of the Bed and Breakfast Innkeepers ofGalena, a Director on the Hospital Board and advisor on various committees. I have been the President of the Bed and Breakfast Innkeepers of Galena, Co-Chairman and Director of The Visitors Center and on various committees as well. Galena is a wonderful town to call home.
If I had to choose some memorable moments – probably first time guests ever to a Bed and Breakfast, nervous and worried about the “rules” of staying at a Bed and Breakfast and then turning around and becoming returning guests on multiple occasions.
The term “labor of love” is all I can think of. I had (and still do have) the perfect partner who had some wonderful ideas and dreams.
It would take too long to go into every memorable moment, but let me assure you we have a lifetime of memories that have made us very happy and proud to own The Cloran Mansion.
It seems like only yesterday that summer was approaching. I can hardly believe that July is over in a few short days and August will be upon us. Never fear Galena has so many wonderful things to do every month of the year. Here are some fun and exciting things to see and do on your getaway this August.
Jo Daviess County Fair is this August 2-4th. What a wonderful opportunity to go to the carnival, play games, listen to music, and eat some yummifications. As the weather warms our memories bring us back to lazy summer days, cookouts, playing in pools and fishing trips. Galena has another wonderful tradition, the Annual Balloon Race. Each year in June the skies above Galena are filled with spectacular hot air balloons by day and in the evening the illumination as they glow in the night sky is breathtaking. The 3 daylong event features balloon rides, car shows, and live music. The Balloon Race is not only a wonderful experience for all; it also benefits the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
We are pleased and excited to announce that we have recently acquired a new condominium that will only enhance the perfect Galena experience. As the newest addition, the Cloran Condo at World Mark’s Longhollow Point Lodge offers all the amenities of a fine hotel and the unique pleasures of a Bed and Breakfast.
Enjoy a spacious studio condo with private balcony, a king size bed, comfortable queen size sofa sleeper, see-through fireplace which separates the bedroom and bathroom that hosts a whirlpool for two and free standing shower booth. A 32-inch flat screen TV/Blu-ray DVD player, and soothing spa alarm clock radio and I pod/MP3 player docking station are provided for your enjoyment.
