Holiday Progressive Dinner

November 9, 2017 by Cheryl Farruggia

A Tasty Treat Through Town

Many people wonder what a progressive dinner is.  A progressive dinner is a meal that consists of different courses at different locations.  Here in Galena the Bed and Breakfast Community has joined together to offer a unique dinner experience at several Inns.  The Cloran Mansion has participated in progressive dinners for over 10 years and we love the opportunity to open our dining room to the guests for a tasty treat.  One of the wonderful things about the December Dinner is that all of the Inns will be decorated for the holidays making it especially festive.  This years Holiday Progressive Dinner will be on December 2nd from 5 pm to 8:15 pm.

While on the dinner tour the guests will travel to an Inn for a course of amazing appetizers, a mouth watering main course of a mixed green salad with diced pears and vinaigrette, Spinach and Red Pepper Pork Roulade with Herb Roasted Red Potatoes, Apple Sauce, Crispy Brussels Sprouts and Rustic Bread, and a delicious holiday dessert.  The Inns will not be serving alcohol but guests are welcome to BYO, just remember to select a designated driver!  Tickets for the Progressive Dinner are available now for $60 a person with a $5 discount for Guests of a Best of Galena Property but will sell out quickly.  Book your reservation at the Cloran Mansion to receive your discounted tickets and we can order your dinner tickets.  If you are staying at another Inn or traveling in for the dinner call Lorraine at 815-777-0893 for tickets.

We look forward to dining with you!

Stroll Down Main Street and Shop Away

November marks that time of year when the holidays are approaching and shopping is at its peak.  There are plenty of opportunities to go to the mall and grab some gifts.   However, there is something special about a unique gift that comes with some thought and inspiration.  The beautiful shops in Downtown Galena have some spectacular gift ideas that will be sure to show the special people on your list how much you care.

November is the perfect time to spend a weekend away from the busy holiday season.  Take a stroll down the historic streets of Galena with a nice warm cup of coffee or hot cocoa all snuggled up in your favorite fall sweater.  Once you have worked up your appetite head into one of the delicious restaurants along Main Street and satisfy your taste buds.  Of course, for that extra special gift we have our holiday gift certificate specials that begin in November and are always cherished by their receiver.

The Jo Daviess County Fair is the oldest one in the state of Illinois, having begun one year before … the Civil War in 1860! Galena, Illinois’ General Grant Homecoming Re-enactment

April 2, 2014 by Corey A. Edwards

General Grant Homecoming Re-enactmentIn 1865, Galena, Illinois celebrated the triumphant return home of General Ulysses S. Grant – now you can, too at the General Grant Homecoming Re-enactment!

Ulysses S. Grant had a home in Galena from the spring of 1860 until his last visit in 1880, though history buffs will look at those dates and understand that he spent few of those years actually living in the residence. Between 1861 and 1865 he was busy winning the war for the Union and, from 1868 to 1871, he was busy being president.

Despite this, Galenans loved their hometown hero and kept him as their own. Grant certainly seemed to feel the same and continually returned to Galena when he could. Celebrating the general’s victorious return to Galena with a 3-day re-enactment of life in those times – both military and civilian – almost 150 years later is a fitting gesture.

Open daily 9-4:30. Please visit http://www.galenahistorymuseum.org for more details.

Galena Trolley Tour

Galena Trolley Tours offers historically and architecturally narrated tours. Relax as you listen to Galena’s history of a town nestled in the hills and valleys of a once thriving lead mining community, and major river port stop. Please visit http://www.galenatrolleys.com for more details.

Ulysses S. Grant Home State Historical Site

In 1904 Grant’s children gave the house to the City of Galena “with the understanding that this property is to be kept as a memorial to the late General Ulysses S. Grant, and for no other purpose.” However, maintaining the Grant’s home proved too costly for the city and the Grant Home Association, so in 1931 the city deeded the house to the State of Illinois.  A thorough restoration project was undertaken in 1955. Considerable research was undertaken as the house was returned to its 1868 appearance. Fortunately, much of the furniture used by Grant and his family remained in the house. Please visit http://www.granthome.com for more details.

We hope that you will take advantage of these amazing historical packages we have to offer. Please call for pricing and details. At the end of the day, enjoy a bit of alone time in our well-appointed, romantic rooms. Relax by our beautiful pond, enjoy our cozy gazebo, or cuddle close together around our fire pit.  We look forward to seeing you soon!
