Thank You to All Our Wonderful Guests!

June 20th, 2018 by Cheryl Farruggia

Cheryl and I have recently sold the Cloran Mansion.  A wonderful couple, Paul and Janet have purchased it and will be the new owners as of July 2.

The time has come to say thank you to all of our guests, all of you who have become friends and some who became very special friends.

Our 17 years as innkeepers of the Cloran Mansion have been amazing and we could not have done it without you.  The memories that we have will always be cherished.  The lives we have touched and the lives that have touched us will remain in our hearts forever.

Paul is a former high school teacher and this is his dream just like it was Cheryl’s.  We have been working with him, mentoring and guiding him as to ensure a smooth transition.  If we had a choice in hand picking our successors we could not have made a better choice.

Over the years we have made many changes to the Cloran Mansion.  We have made it our own through hard work, vision, and with the help of many of you who have guided us all along from the very first day.

Paul and Janet will be keeping our packages, policies and visions but eventually will make it their own with fresh ideas and the help of returning guests and new ones.  It is our hope that you will continue to make the Cloran Mansion your home away from home.

It is very difficult to say goodbye to this rewarding and remarkable career and especially to the guests who made Cheryl’s dream come true and a wonderful reality for me.

As we start the newest chapter of our lives we will be more involved with our children and grandchildren but we will always have memories of you and hope to stay in touch.

Thank you for making our lives so fulfilling and please continue to make Cloran Mansion your place.

All of our best wishes,

Carmine and Cheryl

A Stroll Downtown

May 21st, 2018 by Cheryl Farruggia

We have called Galena home for nearly 20 years….

and have gone downtown almost daily since then but rarely in the past decade have I taken the time to go for a stroll in and out of the shops like I did in those first few years.  Well over Mother’s Day weekend I joined my daughter for a walk downtown.  It was such a great time, not only spending time with my daughter but getting to see all the wonderful shops and their unique products.  While I would love to tell you about all the shops it would be far to long of a post.

There are shops with some amazing spices, jams, jellys, and glazes that have so many tasting stations your taste buds will be in heaven.  We have a specialty Root Beer shop, Coffee Shop, Popcorn Shop, Candy Shop, and Ice Cream Shop.  I mean come on how could you not love Galena.  There are some great clothing boutiques including one with socks with just about anything you can imagine on them, T-shirt Shop with some seriously funny and cute sayings, and some shoe stores with products you won’t find in your local mall.  If your looking for something unique we have a specialty toy store with things old and new, a shop with unique games and hilarious products, and a shop with amazing garden decor.  Galena wouldn’t be the same without our antique stores as you walk down our gorgeously maintained Main Street.

Your probably thinking after all that shopping you might get hungry and there is no need to worry because there are some tasty options for everyone downtown.  We have Italian cuisine, French and German fare, American classics, Pizza, and a Steakhouse.  What more could you ask for?

The Spring weather is great for a stroll downtown, maybe some retail therapy mixed with some exercise and quality time with someone special.  It is just what the soul needs to recover from our long winter.  We look forward to seeing you soon

Elvis Has Left The Building….

March 26th, 2018 by Cheryl Farruggia

….After his stay at The Cloran Mansion!

We have the bests guests and Elvis the Gnome was just one of our many.  Elvis and his friends Steve and Michelle spent a few days with us in Sara’s Suite and he sure did enjoy the place.  He sent us a bunch of great pictures to show how much fun and relaxation he had.

We don’t normally approve of our guests standing on the fireplace but what can you say to the King of Rock n Roll.

Well Elvis didn’t just enjoy a dance on the fireplace, shaking those hips that made the girls go crazy because it’s “Now or Never”.

Then he decided to try to get the ladies in our Italian antique lamps to notice him but needless to say they were not into his style of music.  They are a bit snobby to say the least and the one in pink is a “Hard Headed Woman”.

After all that dancing around the room he had to relax in the whirlpool tub before enjoying a cup of coffee from one of our Cloran Mansion mugs.  Elvis said the King size bed in Sara’s Suite is one that he “Can’t help falling in love” with.

As he checked out he told us that this was no “Heartbreak Hotel” but a “Good Luck Charm” and he would be back soon.

Spring Forward….

March 15th, 2018 by Cheryl Farruggia

Cloran Mansion goldfish pond

…We changed our clocks and that means Spring is approaching.

No one enjoys the week of daylight savings, we all feel we have been robbed of that extra hour for at least a week or so.  But once we adjust we remember that changing the clocks in March means one thing, SPRING!!  It is that time of year when all the fragrant smells of tulips, lilacs, and daffodils fill the air.  The trees begin to show the sprouting of new leaves, the grass grows greener, and the day light stays longer.

I love to wake up in the morning as I get ready to prepare breakfast for our guests and look on our grounds for what new life has sprouted since the day before.  Our Koi pond comes to life more and more each day as the plants and lily pads welcome our fish.  The cottage begins to be surrounded by the gorgeous gardens we have planted.  And that smell that makes you feel like each day is perfumed with joy and happiness.

Each season has its special memories, it’s own promise of special times.  The spring warmth and rebirth is so refreshing that it puts a smile on my face.  As we change from season to season I enjoy taking a moment to appreciate the beauty that it brings and the gratefulness that we live in such a magnificent place to see the most amazing parts of all 4 seasons.

We hope you have an opportunity to come visit us this spring and experience the wonderful elegance that Galena has as the town comes to life with all the new baby animals and the blossoming of the trees and flowers.

We look forward to seeing you soon,

Cheryl and Carmine

March Madness…..

February 28th, 2018 by Cheryl Farruggia

….At The Cloran Mansion means a refresh.

We have been spending the last few weeks doing some updating to the mansion and we can’t wait to share them with you.  John’s room got a fresh coat of beautiful blue paint and some fancy new linens that make the room so relaxing.  The Dining room was repainted and we took some time to update our wedding photo wall.  It is so lovely to see all our wonderful weddings we have had over the years.  It is hard to believe we have had the pleasure of witnessing over 200 weddings.  Last but not least we lightened The Tower with a more soothing cream tone and added some luxuries to the cupola where are hot tub for two awaits.

We are so proud of our hard work and can’t wait for you to come see the changes we have made.  We take such pride in keeping the Cloran a relaxing and refreshing place for our guests to come home to.

Snow Got You Down…..

February 12th, 2018 by Cheryl Farruggia

Ski Chestnut Mountain

….Well Take the Ski Lift up to Chestnut Mountain.

Chicago and the Midwest have been hit will mountains of snow over the last few days.  Kids have enjoyed a snow day or two and some sledding but most of the adults have spent their time digging out, salting, and battling the slick roads and weather stricken traffic conditions.  Give yourself a break and head on over to Galena to warm up, relax, drink some wine, and go skiing.

Chestnut Mountain has something for everyone with 19 ski slopes, 3,500-ft run and 475-ft drop of Chestnut Mountain.  For the beginner they have Old Main, Bunny, Acorn, and Rookie’s Ridge while you get your ski legs ready.

Intermediate, advanced, and freestyle terrains are also available for the more experienced skiers and snowboarders. From novice to black diamond, riding through 220 acres of Chestnut Mountain will leave you breathless and in love.

Chestnut Mountain’s Far Side Terrain is the Midwest’s largest snow-covered terrain park, and all seven acres of its vastness is accessible through a triple chairlift.  Their 25 unique rails will have you entertained for hours.  Then come back home to us at The Cloran Mansion for a soak in your hot tub and snuggle up to a warm fire in your room for a romantic evening or a go downtown and enjoy some of the nightlife of Galena.

We can help you set up reservations when you book your stay.  We look forward to hearing all about your adventure.

Happy New Year

January 2nd, 2018 by Cheryl Farruggia

Welcome 2018

Thanks for the blessings of 2017!

With each passing year we ring in the New Year with dreams and goals for the year to come as we celebrate and commiserate the year we leave behind.  2017 has left us many beautiful memories as we watched couples begin their lives together making marriage vows here at the Mansion, couples come for one last getaway before they welcomed the birth of a child, and people celebrating anniversaries, birthdays, and just taking time to getaway.  We have had the amazing opportunity to listen to your stories and share in your joy.  For that we Thank you all!

Over the years we have built relationships with our guests that will last a lifetime.  Some guests come so frequently to stay with us; they are like family by now.  We are very grateful for your friendships.  We look forward to your visits very much, we are so glad our home feels like home to you as well.

2018 will bring so many more happy occasions and there are so many glorious things we have to look forward to.  The winter chill and snow will bring our snow bunnies out to the slopes at Chestnut Mountain.  As the frost melts and the spring air returns we look forward to all the exciting activities our perfect little town has to offer.  This March we will bee bopping at our 6th Annual Galena Goes 50’s Weekend.  The summer heat brings golf outings, shopping trips, Hot Air Balloons, and plenty of great festivals.  As we cool down for fall and the colors change we have our Annual Ladies Getaway Weekend, Oktoberfest, and our Halloween Parade and Festival.  Then we are back to the Winter Holidays and all the warm fireplace snuggles and the spirit of the season fills the streets.

We look forward to it all and we hope to see you this year.  Come visit us and experience an event in Galena you haven’t had the chance to before.

Happy New Year to you and yours.  Cheers to 2018!!

Many people wonder what a progressive dinner is.  A progressive dinner is a meal that consists of different courses at different locations.  Here in Galena the Bed and Breakfast Community has joined together to offer a unique dinner experience at several Inns.  The Cloran Mansion has participated in progressive dinners for over 10 years and we love the opportunity to open our dining room to the guests for a tasty treat.  One of the wonderful things about the December Dinner is that all of the Inns will be decorated for the holidays making it especially festive.  This years Holiday Progressive Dinner will be on December 2nd from 5 pm to 8:15 pm.

While on the dinner tour the guests will travel to an Inn for a course of amazing appetizers, a mouth watering main course of a mixed green salad with diced pears and vinaigrette, Spinach and Red Pepper Pork Roulade with Herb Roasted Red Potatoes, Apple Sauce, Crispy Brussels Sprouts and Rustic Bread, and a delicious holiday dessert.  The Inns will not be serving alcohol but guests are welcome to BYO, just remember to select a designated driver!  Tickets for the Progressive Dinner are available now for $60 a person with a $5 discount for Guests of a Best of Galena Property but will sell out quickly.  Book your reservation at the Cloran Mansion to receive your discounted tickets and we can order your dinner tickets.  If you are staying at another Inn or traveling in for the dinner call Lorraine at 815-777-0893 for tickets.

The Crisp Fall Air

September 5th, 2017 by Cheryl Farruggia

Take a Galena Fall Foliage vacation!

Fall in Love with Galena

As summer nights drift to the cool fall breeze there is nothing more beautiful than the scenic hills of the Galena countryside.  The elaborate colors that paint their way over the trees is one of most amazing sights I have ever seen.  I fell in love with the sights and the smells of Galena in Autumn.  It almost begs for the warm arms of a loved one.  The soft embrace of a well-worn sweater and the warm crackling of a fire at night to cozy up to.  There is no more perfect time to visit Galena then during the changing of the leaves.

The weather is perfect for a trip downtown through the shops while enjoying a hot coffee at Kaladi’s Coffee bar, Devour Café, or Mean Bean Roaster’s.  For the golfer, it is the perfect time to hit the tee as the last fleeting days of the season sprinkle away.  The town is filled with activities to keep the fall spirit alive.  If you feel adventurous and brave enough there are some haunting ghost tours to get the heart pumping.  And what could be better after a day of shopping and spooking then to cozy on up to a fire-pit among friends with some libations and laughter to last the night long.  Galena has endless opportunities for relaxation, romance, fun and adventure.
