The past comes alive in Galena’s Greenwood Cemetery this June during the 21st annual, Galena Cemetery Walk.
More than just a remembrance of the lives of past Galenians, the annual Galena Cemetery Walk introduces the attendee to history in a lively, entertaining, and more personal way than a book or movie might do because one has the opportunity to hear from the “ghosts” of Galena’s Greenwood cemetery; ten local actors.
Guided 75-minute tours of Greenwood cemetery will start every 20 minutes between the hours of 2 and 4:30pm on June 14th and 15th. Visitors will be treated to numerous interesting and notable Galenians of the past, whose tales range from the poignant to the comedic and include:
Margaret Gardener, who was a beloved first grade teacher in Galena from 1870 until 1935 and lived for a time in Galena’s Old Stockade.
Four members of the Bench family, played an important role in the early years of Galena business.
Galena lawyer, Isaac Perrin Stevens, whose life was filled with turmoil and disappointment, much by his own hand, despite possessing great energy and boundless ambition.
Brigadier General John C. Smith and his Galenian wife, Charlotte Gallaher. General Smith was a celebrated veteran of the Civil War who saw action as commander of the 96th Regiment and was wounded at Kennesaw Mountain.
Another Civil War veteran, Joseph Bayles Leekley, was captured by the Rebels at the battle of Resaca as a young man and died in the Andersonville Prison in Georgia before the end of the war.
The closing act focuses, appropriately enough, on Galena undertaker, Herman Scheerer. Scheerer was a German immigrant who came to Galena in 1853, and served the town for 25 years as both furniture manufacturer and undertaker. A vintage, horse-drawn hearse is included in his piece.
For those unable to attend the walking tours in Greenwood Cemetery, the final, seated performance occurs onstage at Grace Episcopal Church on June 21st.
