Don’t Miss the 2015 Jo Daviess County Fair!

June 22nd, 2015 by Corey A. Edwards

Jo Daviess County Fair 2015The 2015 Jo Daviess County Fair is almost here – July 30th through August 2nd – featuring tractor pulls, a demolition derby, pageants, and of course pro rodeo!

The Jo Daviess County Fair is the oldest one in the state of Illinois, having begun one year before … the Civil War in 1860! Now, that doesn’t make it the oldest county fair in the US by any means but it is a respectable age and, consequently, it is an event with tradition and precedence. People come from all around the state – and even the country! – to attend.

Take a Galena Trolley Tour!

June 12th, 2015 by Corey A. Edwards

Take a Galena Trolley TourTour the picturesque and historic town of Galena, Illinois – Home of President Ulysses S. Grant – in fitting style with a Galena Trolley Tour!

Trolleys – both electric and horse drawn – used to be the predominant mode of public transit across North America. Today, only Toronto still operates a streetcar network that remains virtually unchanged – but these urban streetcar systems were once very common in both the big cities and smaller towns. Most were dismantled in the middle of the 20th century, torn out or replaced by light rail and other, more modern forms of mass transit.

Despite this, trolleys remain iconic – and why not? A trolley ride is good fun, hearkening back to simpler times and a slower pace – just about the perfect way to tour a historic town like Galena, too!

Belvedere Mansion – The Downton Abbey of Galena

October 13th, 2014 by Corey A. Edwards

Galena's Belvedere MansionBuilt in 1857, Belvedere Mansion is considered one of the finest Italianate mansions in Galena, Il and has been compared to the Downton Abbey of the popular BBC series fame.

With twenty-two lavishly decorated rooms and a history going back over 150 years, it’s no wonder Belvedere Mansion attracts so much attention. It doesn’t hurt that some of the incredibly ornate furnishings come from the estate of the world-famous entertainer, Liberace, and that the sweeping, green drapes are from the classic film “Gone with the Wind.”

Get Into The Spirit with A Galena Ghost Tour

September 29th, 2014 by Corey A. Edwards

Galena Ghost ToursGalena has history galore and what better way to acquaint yourself with both the town and its past as Halloween approaches but with a Galena Ghost Tour?

Annie Wiggins Ghost Tours will both entertain and educate you as you are guided through the darkened streets of Galena by “the widow, Annie Wiggins.” Dressed in her black, 19th century mourning gown and veil, and holding a lantern high for a smidgen of light, Annie Wiggins will regale you with local lore and legend during her hour and fifteen minute Galena ghost tour.

You’ll hear popular, paranormal stories about the Galena and the surrounding area as she guides your group up Galena’s Park Avenue, to Bouthillier Street, on to the cemetery, then back again to Park Avenue. Being there with the apparently spectral Annie Wiggins helps to personalize the tales with “someone who was there” and “really knew” the figures she talks about. No other Galena ghost tour is as original or as personal!

Galena’s reputation as a “haunted community” is conjecture, of course, and “Annie Wiggins” is the creation of Galena local Wendy Heiken – but what fun to take a Galena ghost tour with a “real ghost” near Halloween time! Whether you believe in ghosts or are just along for the fun, Annie Wiggins’ Galena ghost tours are an entertaining time, with Annie’s stories removing fear from the possibility of ghosts and turning it, instead into something that can reach from the past to inform the present.

Galena’s Old Stockade on the Cobblestone Street

August 16th, 2014 by Corey A. Edwards

Galena’s Old Stockade - Chief Black Hawk

– Chief Black Hawk –
unwitting architect of Galena’s Old Stockade

There was a time when Illinois was the disputed edge of the American frontier and Galena’s Old Stockade on the Cobblestone Street is a living reminder of those times.

Constructed rapidly in 1832 by frightened citizens, Galena’s Old Stockade was the first – and potentially last – layer of protection for area residents under the threat of displaced and angry native peoples during the Black Hawk War.

Black Hawk was the war chief of the Sauk tribe who spent a good portion of his life trying to protect his people’s lands, which were lost in a disputed treaty in 1804.

June 27th, 2014 by Corey A. Edwards

Cloran Mansion Certificate Excellence 2014We’re very proud to have, once again, won TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence!

TripAdvisor, the world’s largest travel site, awards these certificates annually but only to the top 10 percent of businesses that receive a high volume of consistently outstanding reviews from their customers through the TripAdvisor site.

We work very hard to make sure our guests leave with their expectations not just met but exceeded – but we couldn’t have won this honor if it hadn’t been for you, our guests, taking the time to leave reviews on TripAdvisor’s site like the following:

I can not tell you how amazing The Cloran is! My fiance and I wanted a very small wedding … Cheryl helped arrange everything from the flowers, to the cake, to making sure we had extra Coke on hand for my hubby. Our family was so impressed with the location, and the day was perfect. … The food is excellent, the hosts are down to earth and accommodating, and the house is simply amazing. Can’t wait to book our anniversary weekend!

Save your time & energy looking for THE place to just more than stay while in Galena! … You arrive as an acquaintance and leave as if you are a dear, chosen friend.

Carmine and Cheryl served us absolutely wonderful breakfasts and Carmine offered many helpful tips on places to see and visit during the three days and four night visit. We will not hesitate to stay here again if the opportunity arises!

… we were thrilled to spend our 25th wedding anniversary with Carmine and Cheryl at the Cloran Mansion. Carmine and Cheryl helped my husband plan every single detail … we did not plan for problems with our vehicle … Carmine drove my husband to the parts store in Iowa … then they took the time to call us to make sure we arrived home without any trouble… we call Cloran Mansion our home away from home.

This is just a sampling from the first page of reviews for Cloran Mansion Bed and Breakfast on the TripAdvisor site – we could go on but we’re blushing!

Come stay at the Cloran Mansion Bed and Breakfast the next time you’re in the Galena, IL area and see why we earned TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence for 2014.

Galena, Illinois’ General Grant Homecoming Re-enactment

April 2nd, 2014 by Corey A. Edwards

General Grant Homecoming Re-enactmentIn 1865, Galena, Illinois celebrated the triumphant return home of General Ulysses S. Grant – now you can, too at the General Grant Homecoming Re-enactment!

Ulysses S. Grant had a home in Galena from the spring of 1860 until his last visit in 1880, though history buffs will look at those dates and understand that he spent few of those years actually living in the residence. Between 1861 and 1865 he was busy winning the war for the Union and, from 1868 to 1871, he was busy being president.

Despite this, Galenans loved their hometown hero and kept him as their own. Grant certainly seemed to feel the same and continually returned to Galena when he could. Celebrating the general’s victorious return to Galena with a 3-day re-enactment of life in those times – both military and civilian – almost 150 years later is a fitting gesture.

Refresh, Renew, and Romance

March 4th, 2014 by Cheryl Farruggia

Every year we take one of our rooms and we give it an update.  A fresh coat of paint, fresh new colors, cozy new bedspreads, and little loving touches to make our guests feel right at home.  This year Ann’s Room was on the list for a little bit of love.  After the busy holidays we got to work on her makeover.  We chose gorgeous shades of platinum, cream, and goldenrod to enhance the sensual mood that Ann’s Room inspires.  A freshly papered wall embraces the blonde hues throughout the wood of the fireplace and cathedral ceiling.  The bold slate draperies bring a touch of masculinity to the sweet softness of the pillowy bed below.  The double whirlpool tub draws the goldenrod and grey with an adorable shower curtain in the room’s private bath that is sure to soothe the soul and enhance the mood.  Ann’s Room is one of our guest favorites and we are sure it will be your favorite too.

Book your romantic getaway soon and enjoy the sweet smells of spring.

We look forward to seeing you.

The Adelman’s

November 17th, 2012 by Cheryl Farruggia

On a picture perfect fall afternoon David and Carol Adelman exchanged vows in front of both of their loving families.  The beautiful couple were married on November 10, 2012.  Both David and Carol come from families with memorable traditions and were able to melded both their family traditions into a unique and beautiful wedding.  The Rabi preformed the Jewish ceremony and incorporated Carol’s Philippine custom of the wrapping of the veil and cord of 8.  We were so touched by the love and admiration of this handsome couple and their families.

Best Wishes to The Adelman’s

October 15th, 2012 by Cheryl Farruggia

We love our Bed and Breakfast and it makes our day to hear kind words from our guests after they have had the opportunity to relax and unwind at our Inn.  We take great pride in making sure each one of our guests has a memorable stay away from home during their time with us.  Here is what one of our guests last week had to say about his visit:

My wife and I had the pleasure of staying at the Cloran Mansion in Galena Illinois this past week. What an awesome experience! The grounds surrounding the beautifully kept Italianate Mansion were pristine. The Inn itself was beautiful down to every detail. Our room had a fireplace, flat screen TV, DVD and its own bathroom. The bedding was superb. We were right next to the parlor that shelved hundreds of DVDs – a movie for anyone’s taste.
The breakfast was great in quantity and quality. The pumpkin pancakes were the best I ever tasted.
The friendliness and care provided by the Innkeepers, Cheryl and Carmen made this our best B&B experience ever!

Our 99th Newlyweds

October 1st, 2012 by Cheryl Farruggia

Mark Imerman and Patricia West could not have chosen a more perfect day.  The sky was clear and a beautiful shade of blue.   An autumn breeze was slow and gentle and Patricia made her way to the Heart Arbor to meet her soon to be husband.   Mark’s son Nick and Patricia’s daughter, Laura were present to witness the ceremony.  Couple #99 said their I do’s on September 26.   After the ceremony the new family had dinner together, toasted champagne and shared wedding cake.  We wish them our best today and always.

Ryan and Dana are Engaged!

September 6th, 2012 by Cheryl Farruggia

Ryan Archer had great plans for this weekend. He must have been planning the special moment during his trip from Chicago to the Cloran Mansion. How would he surprise Dana Sunga during their romantic getaway to Galena and our Bed and Breakfast. He decided to ask Dana to be his wife while enjoying the sounds of the waterfall from the pond inside the gazebo. They announced their engagement to us just as they were leaving to head back to share the news with family and friends in and around Chicago. Thank you Ryan and Dana for allowing us to be a part of your engagement memories. You have been added to the list as couple #69 in our engagement photo album.
